All set for the fashion fest

The city is set to get hotter this weekend. Glamorous models will showcase
the best of collections by renowned designers across India at the seventh
edition of Volvo Cars Chennai International Fashion Week from September 18 to 20
at Vivanta by Taj Connemara. With a line-up of nine designers, including popular
names like city-based Chaitanya Rao, Sanjana Jon from New York and Rocky S from
Mumbai, the show is set to spike the city’s glam quotient to new levels,
promises Gaurav Sharma, CEO, Storm Fashion Company, which is collaborating with
Volvo Cars to organise the show. While Chaitanya has designed for the who’s who
of Tamil cinema, and has a boutique in the city, Rocky S, a popular name among
Bollywood celebrities, has designed for stars like Priyanka Chopra, Bipasha Basu
and John Abraham.

According to Gaurav, this edition is more luxurious than last year’s, with
Volvo setting up a specially designed lounge for the show. And to whip up the
experience a little, a Mumbai-based rock band, One Night Stand, will be flying
down to perform at the venue, he confirms. “Unlike earlier, when their
performance was scheduled at the end of the show, this time, they will perform
even as the models sashay down the ramp,” he adds. That apart, the event will
also see a hair and make-up show by city-based Touchhe Makeover Studio.

Besides the introduction of a few new concepts, what the event really
attempts to do is bring in a sense of familiarity for the audience, says fashion
editor Shakthi Girish. “If you are watching an episode of a series, you would
expect a sense of familiarity with the next one. It’s the same for CIFW. Our
focus is to bring out collections that will appeal to the Chennai public,” she
adds.

As far as the designers are concerned, Bangalore-based Manoviraj Khosla, who
showcased his collection last year, is back with digital-printed and
sequence-worked skirts for women, and laser-cut jackets and bandhgalas for men,
and Sanjana Jon is presenting her collection symbolising the various roles and
energies a woman has, after a year, at the show.

Apart from the big names, the event is also a platform for young designers
like Sangeetha M to showcase their talent, chips in Gaurav. Other designers
include Hari Anand from Kochi, popular designer Nazia Syed from Chennai and
Jules Idi Amin from Chennai.
