Battling with hat hair

There is one simple solution to avoiding hat hair – don't wear a hat.

But for the sake of argument, let's say you would like to wear a hat this
season without your locks forming a frizzy hairball underneath.

Well, here's what you need to know make your hair behave this season:

Fight the frizz

Elevation 138 salon stylist and self-professed hat lover Katie Gerber says
static electricity is the main culprit of hat hair.

“You're going to need to combat it with a leave-in conditioner and a good
shine spray helps quite a bit, especially if you spray it on the inside of your
hat, too,” she says. “There's a lot of components inside the conditioner that's
going to help lay your hair down, the shine spray will help smooth the cuticle
as well.”

Gerber also suggests spraying anti-static spray on scarves and clothing, or
rubbing sections of hair with dryer sheets to decrease static. You get the added
bonus of smelling of like fresh laundry all day.

Keep it light

Hats create heat, which leads to sweat, and that's bad news for your hair
because the oils from your sweat will flatten your hair, and heavier products
such as hair gel will melt.

Cheryl Livingston, owner of The Loft salon, says using a lightweight product
such as dry shampoo removes those oils from your hair, and still leaves you with
movement.

“Pureology and Redken both came out this year with a really amazing dry
shampoos that don't turn your hair white like the old-fashioned ones used to
do,” she says. “It's going to add fragrance, it's a frizz fighter and it is also
great for post-gym hair. When you apply it to your roots, you're going to get an
instant lift, so apply it after you take off your hat to give you some
volume.”

To have and to hold

While women may want movement and volume, Bill Zemaitis, co-owner of
Elevation 138, says men with short hair usually want their hair to stay in one
place. He likes to apply Pureology's mousse and hair paste with a finishing hair
spray to give his hairstyle some staying power. Running a good bristle brush
through your hair while styling revives the scalp, which he says men often
overlook.

“For a lot of guys, we like our hair stiff, fixed and done, so we don't have
to mess with it, but if we use a heavy gel that's going to be the issue,” he
says. “As stiff as my hair can be, I can still run my hands through it and it
pops right back.”

All stylists agree both men and women should keep travel-size versions of all
their anti-hat hair products for emergencies at the gym or office.

They also make great stocking stuffers.

“I honestly believe the more products, the better,” Gerber says,
laughing.
