the rain this weekend
How to wear your summer dresses in the rain this weekend
In a cruel twist of summer fate we are facing a weekend of rain in August.
Downpour and ditsy sun dresses do not a match maketh, and it’s not even worth
considering how a maxi will fair in puddles. But, before you despair about what
to wear to tomorrow’s barbeque, we bring hope. Certain styling tweaks can
transform even the most delicate dress into a layering piece that will withstand
the showers and keep you looking original.
Embrace the under knit
Chances are you have already embraced the slip trend by wearing a cotton tee
underneath flimsy Nineties-style dresses. Take this look one step further, and
layer cosy knits underneath all your strapless dresses.
If the dress is tight, a fine knit will do, but if you have room to play with
try a sports sweater or hoodie to nod to the athletic trend. By doubling up on
top, you can leave your legs bare and still stay toasty (your ankles and shins
are more hardy than you might think!)
Put your best boot forward
Sandals and ballet pumps are a no go this weekend if you want to avoid soggy
shoe syndrome. Instead, toughen up summer dresses with ankle boots. Flat, chunky
styles will add a grungy element to fresh summer palettes, while low-block heels
make for a ladylike flourish.
If you’re yet to buy your new season ankle boots, trainers are still a viable
option, and give the same ‘street’ look as mannish booties. Wear Reebok Classics
or low styles with maxis, like Trine Kjær (main picture) and Converse high-tops
with shorter hem lengths.
It’s all about blue jeans, baby
Wearing your favourite summer dress over jeans might seem like an
unconventional form of layering, but, trust us, it works. If you’re worried
about swamping your silhouette start off with a tie-waist dress that will draw
everything in. Slit dresses are also useful to keep legs visible, and will make
for a cool, billowing effect when walking.
