global Indian fashion

Think Bollywood fashion and what comes to mind are elaborate costumes,

profusion of colours and attention to detail.

In the hopes of drawing inspiration from the splendour and intricacies of
Indian fashion, local and international designers will showcase their unique
take during the inaugural Malaysia Indian Fashion Festival (MIFF) 2016
tomorrow.

The event will take place at Matrade Exhibition and Convention Centre in
Kuala Lumpur and organised by Fusion Media Productions Sdn Bhd.

MIFF founder and Fusion Media chief executive officer Kishvin Sirinavin said
the showcase was the brainchild of a group of influential Malaysians to create a
platform that will showcase global Indian fashion.

“If there is one word that summarises MIFF 2016, it is ‘fusion’.

“We want to show a fusion of cultures, styles, high fashion and everyday
fashion as well as the modern and traditional.

“In line with this, our theme for MIFF 2016 is “Trendy-tional”, and our
tagline is ‘Where real fashion meets true passion’,” he said during a pre-event
showcase at Parkroyal Kuala Lumpur.

He added that unlike its name, the fashion festival was not only open to
Malaysian Indian designers.

“It is open to any designer who has injected at least 10% of Indian-style
elements of motifs and themes into their designs,” he explained.

Additionally, Kishvin said the festival would be re-branded to Malaysia
International Fashion Festival from next year onwards to better reflect the
diversity of the participants.

The pre-event was launched by Tourism Malaysia Domestic Promotion director
Iskandar Mirza Mohd Yusof.

“We are pleased to support this event as we believe lifestyle and fashion
programmes can boost the country’s shopping sector.

“On average, a third of tourists’ receipts are spent on shopping. These types
of events can showcase what Malaysia has to offer and provide an avenue for
designers,” he said.

This year, the event has drawn international participants including those
from Singapore, India and Iran as well as several local designers.

A total of 16 designers will showcase in two categories;
Trendsetter–Emerging, which features upcoming designers; and Premier–Elite.

Some of the designers lined up include Sarvenaz (Iran), Vineetha Goel
(India), J. Calista (Singapore), Hari Haran Arasu, Rasta Rashid, Harsimrit
Dhaliwal, Joshua Benedict, Mora Laree, Zeel Bridal and SS Couture, among
others.
