Mac or Windows? For a Platform-Agnostic Law Firm, Simplify
September 24, 2012
Those of us who were working in law firms 25 years ago may remember the renegade lawyer who had the audacity to bring an IBM PC to the office, plug it in, and start running MultiMate to create and edit documents. You may even remember the arguments from some senior lawyers about how "lawyers are not secretaries" and would never type their own documents. You might even have heard the economic side of the argument: "If a lawyer is more efficient with a PC and can do the work in half the time, the firm will only get half the revenue ... and we can't have that!"
For those of us who entered the workforce in the last 10 to 15 years, this all seems pretty silly. Technology and workstations — laptops and desktops — are so deeply ingrained in everything that a law firm does that it is inconceivable that we would even try work without them. As for the economic arguments, clients would not be amused that a firm was intentionally doing something more inefficiently just to boost profits.
